A list of pocket cruisers I am currently researching. Criteria is tough... has to be trailerable (with an F350, I'm not trying to do this with a Prius), shallow drafted and responsive enough to spend time on Idaho lakes and actually move under our variable winds, solid enough for careful trips throughout the San Juans, and something I can at least lie down in at my height of 6'5". Easy, right?

Displacement / LWL:
Calculates ratio of displacement to length along the waterline, indicating whether a boat is more race oriented or more cruising oriented. Rough values are:
    Ultra light racer: 60-100
    Very light racer: 100-150
    Light cruiser/racer: 150-200
    Light cruiser: 200-250
    Average cruiser: 250-300
    Hefty: cruiser 300-350
    Very hefty cruiser: 350+
Formula is: (Displacement-in-Pounds/2240) / (0.01*Length-on-Waterline-in-Feet)^3

Ballast / Displacement:
A very loose measure of resistance to heeling. The average is around 35%, with higher numbers more resistant, lower numbers more tender.
Formula is: Ballast-in-Pounds / Displacement-in-Pounds

Sail Area/Displacement:
Calculates ratio of sail area to displacement, indicating whether a boat is relatively under-sailed or over-sailed:
    10 - 13 under-canvassed
    14 - 15 conservative
    16 - 20 high-powered
    20+ very high-powered
Formula is: Sail-Area-in-SQ-Ft / (Displacement-in-Pounds/64)^2/3

Capsize:
A value less than 2 is considered to be relatively good; the boat should be relatively safe in bad conditions. The higher the number above 2 the more vulnerable the boat. This is just a rough figure of merit and controversial as to its use.
Formula is: Beam-in-Ft / (Displacement-in-Pounds/64)^1/3

Length/Beam:
A medium value would be 2.7. 3.0 would be high and 2.3 would be low.
<3 indicates a relatively beamy boat (greater cabin room, rougher ride & worse capsize recovery)
>3 indicates a relatively narrow boat (less cabin room, better ride & better capsize recovery)
Formula is: Length-on-Waterline-in-Feet / Beam-in-Feet

PHRF:
PHRF is the "Performance Handicap Racing Fleet" handicap number for a given boat. The higher the value, the larger a time handicap that boat would receive head to head with other boats in a race, therefore it seems vaguely safe to assume that the higher PHRF value, the slower the boat.

PHRF values are based on the "average" value as assigned by US Sailing, taken from their PDF Document listing PHRF values for quite a few boats.
